“Not Acceptable” is a powerful and compelling 30 second television PSA which gives voice to a variety of diverse communities each of whom expresses that it is not acceptable to call them by what were once common words, but are now recognized as offensive slurs. It culminates in actress and self-advocate Lauren Potter from “Glee” stating that it is not acceptable to use the word ‘retard’ and she and “Glee” co-star Jane Lynch make a call to action to stop using the word and to promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to make their pledge online at http://r-word.org.

My father put this PSA together that will be airing tonight during Glee! It is so important that you take a listen to the important message that this video has. People like my sister deserve your respect, and that starts by removing the “R-word” from your vocabulary.

The Hunger Games (trilogy), written by Suzzane Collins

»» Summary: The Hunger Games tells the story of a dystopian society that lies in the ruins of North America; a country that is now called Panem. About 74 years ago, there was an uprising against the Capitol (the elitist government) and when the rebellion failed, Panem was separated into 12 districts, the 13th being left empty and demolished from the war. Now, every year, 2 tributes from each district (one girl and one boy) are chosen to compete in the Hunger Games, a national and televised fight to the death that only houses one winner out of the chosen 24. The story itself centers around Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year-old girl who lives in district 12 with her mother and younger sister, and who is also their primary caregiver. When Primrose Everdeen, Katniss’ younger sister, is chosen to compete, Katniss volunteers to take her place.

»» Why read it?: THG is an extremely interesting and well written series that deserves a lot more praise than it gets. Collins does a great job with creating her own world, and she tells the history of Panem and the story of Katniss wonderfully. It’s been a long time since I’ve been this head-over-heels for a book series. It has bits of so many different genres, and a wonderful and strong lead female character (imo) that would put many others to shame. The movie has already begun shooting, and is coming out March 23rd, 2012, so I’m sure it would be nice to read it for yourself and not just because everyone else is. (And of course, this is really the best time to join the fandom since so many are excited for the movie!)
